Cultures unite for Cambridge Carnival International

CambridgeCarnival2014One of the things that makes Cambridge such a vibrant, exciting town is our mix of residents and visitors from all over the world. Help us celebrate our diversity at the 22nd Cambridge Carnival International, a free Caribbean-style street festival in Kendall Square, on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014.

The largest annual festival in Cambridge, the carnival is best known for its spectacular parade through the streets of Cambridge featuring steel bands and troops of dancers in colorful handmade costumes. This year the parade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. near the Charles River, proceeds up River Street to Massachusetts Avenue and Main Street, and ends at the viewing stage in Kendall Square near MIT.

Musical performances by Caribbean, Afro-pop, reggae, calypso and roots bands will be featured all afternoon on the international stage, along with DJs spinning a festive selection of world music. International vendors will offer food and handcrafts with a multicultural flair. Children’s activities include arts and crafts and face painting.

Lose yourself in Boston’s lovely labyrinth

Love labyrinths? This summer, you can join the Labyrinth Guild of New England to walk the labyrinth at the Armenian Heritage Park on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. This beautifully designed labyrinth, the only one on public land in the Northeast, is paved in granite set into the lawn, with a water fountain at its center.

If you’ve never seen a labyrinth, these geometric paths have historical roots going back to ancient Crete and medieval Europe. They are used by some people as tools for healing and meditation, while others just enjoy the contemplative experience of walking the winding route. Some people move quickly, others slowly; some are goal-oriented, others meandering. Truly, a labyrinth can be anything you want it to be!

Dates for the labyrinth walk are Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. on June 4, July 2, Aug. 6, Sept. 3, and Oct. 1; and Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. on June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 15.

The labyrinth is also open to passersby at any time of day, so if you’re sightseeing in the North End or visiting Faneuil Hall, stop by and check it out. In addition to the labyrinth, the Armenian Heritage Park includes an abstract sculpture celebrating the immigrants from all over the world who have made Boston their home. With plenty of seating, the park is a popular spot for a lunch break on a summer day. It’s easy to get there from the Kendall Hotel by subway – just ask us for directions!

The Phantom of the Opera: Back and better than ever

phantomThe Phantom of the Opera, the best-selling and longest-running Broadway show of all time, returns to Boston this summer in a production that promises to outdo itself.

Revitalized with an all-new set, staging, and choreography, the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will run from June 26 through July 20 at the Boston Opera House.

The original Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988, and it’s been running ever since. It tells the story of a poignant love triangle among young soprano Christine, her suitor Raoul, and the mysterious Phantom, who lurks in the shadows of the Paris Opera House. This new production, which just completed a sold-out tour of the United Kingdom, features Mark Campbell as The Phantom, Julia Rose Udine as Christine, and Ben Jacoby as Raoul.

Among the show’s highlights are the exquisite costumes, the spectacular special effects – including the famous chandelier – and of course, the unforgettable musical score.

Visit the Boston Opera House website for more information and a schedule of performances. Tickets are available here.
