Stay at the Kendall Hotel to Enjoy the Museum of Fine Arts’ Latest Exhibits

Mario Testino’s celebrity photos at the MFA Boston

Unforgettable images of the British royal family and other international superstars are on display in two current exhibits at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.

“Mario Testino: In Your Face,” running now through Feb. 3, showcases fashion photographer Testino’s glamour shots of such celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Lady Gaga, Mick Jagger, and Brad Pitt. “British Royal Portraits,” on view now through June 16, includes images of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, their sons William and Harry, and recent photos of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – many of which have never been seen before in the U.S.

During the course of Testino’s 30-year career, his photos have graced the covers of Vogue, Allure, and Vanity Fair and have illustrated ads for

high-fashion houses like Chanel and Gucci. His provocative images blur the line between fine art and pop culture, and his show is an edgy change of pace for the Museum of Fine Arts.

Don’t miss these two exciting exhibits! And then come stay with us at the elegant Kendall Hotel, just a subway ride away from downtown Boston and the MFA. Click here to find out about the MFA’s exhibit schedule. Contact us for more information or to book a room.

Boston Ballet presents a brand-new ‘Nutcracker’

What would the holidays be without “The Nutcracker”? For Bostonians, this much-loved production by The Boston Ballet is as much a part of the season as the tree-lighting festivities on Boston Common. And

as everyone knows, you don’t mess with tradition.

Then again, a bit of reinterpretation can sometimes yield magical results. The fact is, there have been countless different versions of “The Nutcracker” throughout the years. Each production company and choreographer gives this ballet a unique spin. This year, it’s The Boston Ballet’s turn to freshen things up a bit. Artistic director Mikko Nissenen has re-imagined the production for 2012 with all new costumes and sets and even some new choreography.

The colors of the production will be lighter, the look “floatier and more romantic,” according to the designers. But don’t worry: the ballet will remain loyal to the classic storyline and, of course, to the wonderful music by Tchaikovsky that we all know and love. There are some traditions just too special to be tinkered with!

The world premier of The Boston Ballet’s 2012 production of “The Nutcracker” takes place on Friday, Nov. 23, at the Boston Opera House. Performances run through Dec. 30. For more information and tickets, click here.

MIT Students Return to Campus

We’re all set for orientation weekend at MIT – an exciting time for students, parents, and the whole neighborhood!

As MIT students know, the school’s housing system is rather unusual in that freshmen arrive on campus not knowing where they’ll be living. Instead, they’re assigned temporary rooms. Then, during orientation, the dorms throw open their doors for tours and social events so that incoming freshmen can investigate their living options and decide where they’d like to stay.

Known as Residence Exploration (or REX), this whirlwind event gives incoming students the chance to check out each residence’s unique personality and choose the place where they think they’ll fit in best.

On Move-in Day (August 30th this year), the whole student body pitches in to help freshmen move their belongings from their temporary accommodations to their permanent living quarters. Expect to see crews of helpful fraternity guys loading and

unloading shuttle vans all around campus!

If you’re a parent of an incoming MIT freshman, you’ll also be attending orientation activities designed just for you this weekend. But when that’s finished, why not take the opportunity to explore Cambridge and Boston and discover what the area has to offer?

At the Kendall Hotel, we’re not only convenient to the MIT campus, we’re just steps away from the Kendall/MIT Red Line subway station and easy transportation to the city’s wonderful variety of shops, restaurants, and historic sites.

Best of all, you can rest assured your accommodations at the Kendall will be comfortable and inviting – a perfect fit for you!

Master Food Artist Returns to the Black Sheep Restaurant in Kendall Square

When the 1895 fire station was being converted to a full – service hotel, owner Charlotte Forsythe and daughter Briar Rose Forsythe – Fandetti wanted to ensure the hotel’s restaurant would support the hotel’s past. The Black Sheep Restaurant was named after the firemen who once served there, and the menu was developed from the women’s own personal recipe collection; tried and tested through-out the years amongst family and friends.

Long time family friend and chef consultant, Dalu Aruda assisted the two women with opening the hotel’s eatery, The Black Sheep Restaurant. Her artistry in the kitchen was astounding and after launching the Black Sheep, Dalu began working on her own interests including teaching cooking on a local television program as well as writing her own cookbook. But recently, Charlotte and Briar Rose convinced Dalu to return as Head Chef for the Black Sheep restaurant on a full-time basis. The Kendall Hotel and Black Sheep Restaurant are thrilled to have Dalu back!

When it comes to Cambridge food establishments, there are many options; the trendy, the tasteful, the traditional, and the conventional chefs – then there is Dalu, a true food artist.

Watching Dalu create in the kitchen is like watching a master artist complete his Mona Lisa. Dalu’s soups each contain a “secret” ingredient; molasses in the Firehouse Chili and gin in her award winning Clam Chowder. She makes a simple from scratch Chicken Pot Pie with outstanding rich flavors – a five star dish! Dalu also creates some special menu items like her wonderful gluten-free cheese rolls, which have soft centers and golden-brown exteriors. Dense, warm, and chewy, they’re made with tapioca flour.

Dalu’s food is all American; fresh, honest and lots of it. Her insistence on quality is apparent in all aspects of her kitchen including her daily trips to the fish and produce markets to personally choose the best product available. Dalu demands perfection and nothing less is delivered to her tables. And no skimpy portions are delivered either!

The Black Sheep Restaurant, located in lobby of the historic Kendall Hotel, is the classic dining destination from the Forsythe – Fandetti collection – where simple hearty American fare is thoughtfully presented, and where friends gather to dine, drink and converse.
