Harvard Museum of Natural History: A treasure right around the corner

Lantern Ceremony honors the start of the American Revolution

If you’re staying with us the weekend of April 13-14, don’t miss the annual Lantern Ceremony, a patriotic event commemorating the start of the American Revolution, to be held at the Old North Church in Boston’s historic North End on Sunday, April 14.

This special observance, which starts at 8 p.m., includes an exclusive courtyard reception (tickets required), an address by Harvard history professor and New Yorker staff writer Dr. Jill Lepore, a performance by the First Michigan Fife & Drum Corps, a reading of Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride,” and the commemorative hanging of two lanterns in the Old North Church steeple (“one if by land, and two if by sea”).

Representatives from the local colonial militia will be on hand, along with the Color Guard from the U.S.S. Constitution. There will also be a recitation of Paul Revere’s personal account of his historic ride on April 18, 1775. This moving re-enactment of American history is sure to appeal to kids and adults alike!

Can’t make it to the Lantern Ceremony? Any day is a great day to explore Boston’s Freedom Trail, a renowned walking tour that includes the Old North Church.

Among the 16 historically significant stops along the Freedom Trail are the Bunker Hill monument, the Old State House, Boston Common, Fanueil Hall, and the site of the Boston Massacre. The 2.5-mile route is marked with a bricked or painted red line, and you can start anywhere you like: at the beginning, the middle, or the end. You can also sign up for a public tour led by 18th-century costumed guides.
